Glass that holds light.

Drag the glass, or use the arrow keys, to walk around it.

First, a block of glass.

Every Cube begins as a single pour of optical glass, cast in one piece so there is no seam for the light to catch on.

Cast once
One pour, no joins. The block of a Cube 20 is 8 litres of glass and weighs 20 kg before it meets its base.
Cooled for weeks
Glass that cools quickly keeps stresses that bend light. Ours is cooled a fraction of a degree per hour: 6 days for a Cube 10, 21 days for a Cube 20.
Polished on five faces
The four sides and the top are polished flat. The sixth face rests on the base, which is where the light comes in.

Clear enough to disappear. Then it had to learn to hold light.

Then we taught it to hold light.

Written once

A femtosecond laser draws 16.7 million points inside the glass, each 0.02 mm across. Unlit, they are finer than a hair and you cannot see them.

Lit thirty times a second

Three lasers in the base sweep the block and light only the points that belong to the picture, 30 times every second.

Drawn in slices

The picture is drawn as 256 stacked slices, 512 in a Cube 20, faster than your eye can tell them apart. What you see is one solid image that stays where it is when you move.

There is no front.

A screen shows you one side of things. A picture inside the Cube keeps all of its sides. Choose one and walk around it.

What the Cube shows

Two words

From the front the light reads GLASS. Walk a quarter turn and it reads LIGHT. Each point is lit only where both words agree, so the word you see depends on where you stand.

Two sizes. The same light.

Clear or Smoke? Clear glass all but disappears in a dim room. Smoke glass is tinted to keep the picture's contrast in daylight. Both hold the same light.

Eight times the volume. The same sharpness.
